This is the dreaded time of the year. February fourteenth looms like a dark cloud and is a constant reminder that you are forever alone (for most people like me). I love you’s and surprise grand gestures kept trolling on your facebook feed, twitter stream and tumblr dashboard. And you’re wondering why you despise so much anything that is related to this supposed to be an affection attack day.
It is juvenile to toss a blanket of hatred and self-indulgence for an entire day. But sometimes it’s how people (or couples) act when this day rolls around. Singles endure the dont-remind-me-that-i-dont-have-a-lover day getting in hangdog horror seeing couples getting all too mushy and extra sweet. But couples on the other hand experience the same dilemma when they get tangled with the dreaded expectations to avoid the disappointments it lure them into.
Run for the hills or know that a litlle change in perspective can turn this day of the month to something heart-warming, not heart-wrenching. First, Act the way you want to feel (i learned this from The Happiness Project book). Of course you want to feel loved on this special day but you tend to be so selfish about your own emotions you tend to forget about your family and friends. Valentine’s day is not only for those couples-who-sometimes-
purposely-shove-their-affection-on-your-face. This day is also the time to show and say how much you love other people. It could be the love for God, for your family, for your relatives, for your real friends (and even frenemies), for Earth, for culture, for religion, for work (and passion if you’re lucky to have both), and for yourself. It can be expressed through words and actions (stretch yourself beyond ordinary efforts). But i believe that small and frequent good deed to others makes a lot more difference than one-time big blow. You can’t give love if you don’t fill yourself with love first. Pierre Reverdy said “There is no love, there are only proofs of love”. Whatever love i feel in my heart others will see it only in my actions. So what a better time to celebrate it other than this day!
Maybe that loathing to the general populous can turn into proofs of love. Either it is the loneliest day for you or the happiest. But i hope it is the latter. Celebrate it with everyone and everywere! Let’s celebrate every love!
